In 2021, the Kuwaiti composite paperboard market increased by 9.5% to $X, rising for the sixth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption posted strong growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, composite paperboard production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 219%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of composite paper and paperboard decreased by -71.6% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after six years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic setback. The smallest decline of -2.2% was in 2015. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for composite paperboard exports from Kuwait, with a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, composite paperboard exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iraq (X tons), more than tenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at -28.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (-20.4% per year) and India (-21.4% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for composite paper and paperboard exports from Kuwait, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates amounted to -22.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-2.0% per year) and Iraq (-22.6% per year).

The average composite paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 49% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 69% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+24.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of composite paper and paperboard increased by 48% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 347% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 421%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Lebanon (X tons) constituted the largest composite paperboard supplier to Kuwait, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, composite paperboard imports from Lebanon exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Lebanon totaled +15.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+19.2% per year) and India (+57.6% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Lebanon ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest composite paperboard suppliers to Kuwait, together accounting for 58% of total imports. These countries were followed by India, China, South Korea, Thailand, Spain, the United States, Syrian Arab Republic and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 21%.

China, with a CAGR of +53.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average composite paperboard import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
