Construction Sands Market Size in Kuwait

After three years of growth, the Kuwaiti construction sands market decreased by -10.9% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of construction sands were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 630% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, construction sands exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 465% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for construction sands exports from Kuwait, with a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, construction sands exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (-9.8% per year) and Iraq (-17.4% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the key foreign market for construction sands exports from Kuwait, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 2.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Saudi Arabia totaled +7.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (-16.9% per year) and Iraq (-19.0% per year).

In 2022, the average construction sands export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -17.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iraq ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of construction sands, when their volume decreased by -9.3% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2,228%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, construction sands imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2,394% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Oman (X tons), India (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of construction sands imports to Kuwait, together accounting for 77% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +80.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Brazil ($X) and Oman ($X) constituted the largest construction sands suppliers to Kuwait, together accounting for 70% of total imports.

Oman, with a CAGR of +71.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average construction sands import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.3% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, construction sands import price increased by +90.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while the price for Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+35.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
