In general, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 152%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 229% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for lettuce and chicory exports from Kuwait, with a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iraq (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +17.5%.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for lettuce and chicory exports from Kuwait, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iraq ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates stood at +8.1%.

The average lettuce and chicory export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -30.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+79.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kuwait
In 2022, supplies from abroad of lettuce and chicory was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 158% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 171%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Jordan (X tons) constituted the largest lettuce and chicory supplier to Kuwait, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory imports from Jordan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lebanon (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (X tons), with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Jordan amounted to -2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lebanon (+3.7% per year) and the United States (-9.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest lettuce and chicory suppliers to Kuwait were Jordan ($X), Lebanon ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 74% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Lebanon, with a CAGR of +17.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lettuce and chicory import price decreased by -2.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+13.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
