Lignite Market Size in Kuwait

In 2022, after nine years of decline, there was significant growth in the Kuwaiti lignite market, when its value increased by 9.8% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, saw a deep contraction. Lignite consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

After five years of decline, shipments abroad of lignites increased by 2.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lignite exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 109%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for lignite exports from Kuwait, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, lignite exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X kg), threefold.

In 2022, overseas purchases of lignites were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2012, thus ending a nine-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep downturn. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lignite imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest lignite supplier to Kuwait, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, lignite imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +9.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-2.3% per year) and Japan (-12.7% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lignites to Kuwait, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Japan totaled -10.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+7.4% per year) and the United States (-10.1% per year).

In 2022, the average lignite import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
