Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18,772% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12,945% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Sri Lanka (X tons) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from Kuwait, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, paper and paperboard exports to Sri Lanka exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sri Lanka totaled +82.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+156.4% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+48.9% per year).
In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) remains the key foreign market for paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports from Kuwait, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sri Lanka totaled +77.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+127.5% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+33.4% per year).

In 2022, the average paper and paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 39% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Kuwait
In 2022, overseas purchases of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) increased by 102% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 351%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, faced a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 318% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of paper and paperboard to Kuwait, accounting for a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, paper and paperboard imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), twofold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Saudi Arabia stood at -28.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-13.2% per year) and Egypt (+1.2% per year).
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the United States ($X) and Egypt ($X) appeared to be the largest paper and paperboard suppliers to Kuwait, with a combined 42% share of total imports.
Egypt, with a CAGR of +2.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average paper and paperboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -3.4% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price increased by +37.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
