Plastic Container Market Size in Kuwait

The Kuwaiti plastic container market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -12.5% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In 2021, overseas shipments of plastic containers decreased by -94.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic container exports declined notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Iraq (X tons) was the main destination for plastic container exports from Kuwait, with a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic container exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), fourfold. Qatar (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Iraq amounted to +6.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-39.7% per year) and Qatar (-37.6% per year).

In value terms, Iraq ($X) remains the key foreign market for plastic containers exports from Kuwait, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Iraq amounted to +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-36.9% per year) and Qatar (-36.5% per year).

In 2021, the average plastic container export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Kuwait

In 2021, plastic container imports into Kuwait reduced rapidly to X tons, declining by -26.1% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 93%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic container imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 66% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic container imports to Kuwait, together comprising 75% of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Italy, Bahrain and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Bahrain (with a CAGR of +97.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and China ($X) were the largest plastic container suppliers to Kuwait, together comprising 74% of total imports. India, Italy, Turkey and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Among the main suppliers, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +99.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average plastic container import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
