The Kuwaiti soft drink market rose modestly to $X in 2021, surging by 4.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a resilient increase. In 2021, shipments abroad of soft drinks decreased by -28% to X litres, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 683%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, soft drink exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 273% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X litres) was the main destination for soft drink exports from Kuwait, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, soft drink exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Jordan (X litres), eightfold. Qatar (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia stood at +43.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (+18.1% per year) and Qatar (+31.6% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the key foreign market for soft drink exports from Kuwait, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Jordan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Saudi Arabia stood at +39.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (+21.5% per year) and Qatar (+38.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average soft drink export price amounted to $X per litre, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Kuwait

Soft drink imports into Kuwait contracted notably to X litres in 2021, falling by -28.5% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 147% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, soft drink imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 132%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X litres), Oman (X litres) and Switzerland (X litres) were the main suppliers of soft drink imports to Kuwait, with a combined 55% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Oman (with a CAGR of +650.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Switzerland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of soft drink to Kuwait, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ireland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 13% share.

The average soft drink import price stood at $X per litre in 2021, increasing by 19% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, soft drink import price increased by +36.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
