In 2021, the Latin American aluminium bar market increased by 1.2% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, shipments abroad of aluminium bars, rods and profiles increased by 36% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium bar exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 120%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mexico was the largest exporter of aluminium bars, rods and profiles in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 38% of total exports in 2021. The Dominican Republic (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ecuador (17%), Colombia (10%) and Brazil (5.6%). The following exporters - Honduras (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium bar exports from Mexico stood at +8.5%. At the same time, Honduras (+73.8%), Ecuador (+18.7%), the Dominican Republic (+16.7%), Colombia (+6.6%) and Brazil (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Honduras emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +73.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, El Salvador (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ecuador (+9.7 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+9.2 p.p.), Honduras (+3.2 p.p.) and Mexico (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Brazil and El Salvador saw its share reduced by -4.2% and -6.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest aluminium bar supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Dominican Republic ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico stood at +11.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Dominican Republic (+19.6% per year) and Ecuador (+19.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Brazil ($X per ton) and El Salvador ($X per ton), while Honduras ($X per ton) and Ecuador ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Aluminium bar imports surged to X tons in 2021, increasing by 31% on 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium bar imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mexico represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 45% of total imports. Colombia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the Dominican Republic (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Chile (X tons). All these countries together took near 31% share of total imports. The following importers - Brazil (X tons), Bolivia (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Panama (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium bar imports into Mexico stood at -12.5%. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+15.2%), Colombia (+11.0%), Peru (+8.5%), Bolivia (+6.7%), Brazil (+5.8%), Costa Rica (+4.4%), Argentina (+4.3%), Chile (+3.7%) and Panama (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guatemala (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Brazil and Bolivia increased by +7.2, +7.2, +5.1, +4, +3 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico stood at -6.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (+10.8% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+14.8% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
