In 2021, shipments abroad of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 41%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, iron angle exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Mexico represented the key exporter of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 60% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons), together creating a 27% share of total exports. Peru (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guatemala (+5.3%) and Argentina (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-1.0%), Brazil (-1.2%) and Costa Rica (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+9.2 p.p.) and Guatemala (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Costa Rica and Brazil saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -7.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest iron angle supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 9.9% share.

In Mexico, iron angle exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (-2.3% per year) and Guatemala (+6.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 43% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Guatemala ($X per ton) and Costa Rica ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel), when their volume increased by 33% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, iron angle imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +9.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
