In 2021, shipments abroad of antimony ores and concentrates was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports showed a resilient expansion. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antimony ore and concentrate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bolivia was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 56% of total exports. Mexico (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Peru (X tons), Guatemala (X tons) and Honduras (X tons). All these countries together held near 42% share of total exports.

Bolivia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of antimony ores and concentrates. At the same time, Honduras (+36.7%), Mexico (+31.6%), Peru (+14.3%) and Guatemala (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Honduras emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +36.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mexico, Peru and Honduras increased by +15, +6.3 and +5.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Bolivia ($X) remains the largest antimony ore and concentrate supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bolivia stood at -1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mexico (+35.5% per year) and Peru (+14.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bolivia ($X per ton), while Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of antimony ores and concentrates decreased by -22.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, antimony ore and concentrate imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Mexico represented the major importer of antimony ores and concentrates in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2021. Venezuela (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Peru (X tons) and Cuba (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total imports. Bolivia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

In value terms, Venezuela ($X), Mexico ($X) and Peru ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +59.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 126% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
