Apple Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +6.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

The average apple yield expanded to X tons per ha in 2021, picking up by 4.5% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the apple yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The apple harvested area dropped modestly to X ha in 2021, standing approx. at 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 3.3%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to apple production attained the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Apple exports dropped slightly to X tons in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 12%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 77% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Argentina (9.9%).

Exports from Chile decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +3.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Argentina (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+4.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Argentina saw its share reduced by -3.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest apple supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports.

In Chile, apple exports contracted by an average annual rate of -1.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+4.8% per year) and Argentina (-8.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, imports of apples in Latin America and the Caribbean declined significantly to X tons, shrinking by -15.9% on the previous year. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 9.5%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 8.7%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mexico (X tons), distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Peru (X tons), Guatemala (X tons) and Bolivia (X tons) were the largest importers of apples, together comprising 76% of total imports. The Dominican Republic (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Honduras (X tons) and Panama (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Paraguay (with a CAGR of +13.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest apple importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Colombia ($X) and Ecuador ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Bolivia and Paraguay, which together accounted for a further 39%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Paraguay, with a CAGR of +17.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bolivia (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
