Apricot Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the Latin American apricot market decreased by -1.7% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable setback. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Apricot Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, apricot production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 89%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Argentina (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of apricot production, accounting for 80% of total volume. Moreover, apricot production in Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Chile (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Argentina was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (-10.2% per year) and Mexico (-0.3% per year).

The average apricot yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2.9%. Over the period under review, the apricot yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of apricots were harvested in Latin America and the Caribbean; leveling off at 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Apricot Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas shipments of apricots were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apricot exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons) represented the main exporter of apricots in Latin America and the Caribbean, making up 98% of total export.

Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of apricots. Chile (+33 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) also remains the largest apricot supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile totaled -2.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Chile amounted to -2.2% per year.

Apricot Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, apricot imports in Latin America and the Caribbean shrank markedly to X tons, dropping by -66.2% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 63%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apricot imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Mexico prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 78% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), creating a 6.3% share of total imports. Argentina (X tons), Aruba (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -12.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uruguay (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uruguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +6.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Argentina (-5.8%), Aruba (-6.5%) and Brazil (-19.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mexico and Uruguay increased by +7.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported apricots in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico stood at -9.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (-15.7% per year) and Uruguay (+15.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 37% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
