In 2021, the amount of articles of bitumen in rolls exported in Latin America and the Caribbean reduced to X square meters, with a decrease of -6.1% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 4.6%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mexico was the main exporter of articles of bitumen in rolls in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports recording X square meters, which was approx. 47% of total exports in 2021. Argentina (X square meters) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Venezuela (X square meters). All these countries together took approx. 43% share of total exports. The following exporters - Brazil (X square meters), Ecuador (X square meters) and Colombia (X square meters) - together made up 9.5% of total exports.

Exports from Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -8.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+27.6%), Brazil (+18.1%) and Ecuador (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +27.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Venezuela (-5.9%) and Argentina (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela increased by +3.5, +2.3, +2.1 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest rolled bitumen articles supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Argentina ($X) and Venezuela ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Among the main exporting countries, Colombia, with a CAGR of +27.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per square meter, waning by -11.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 7.8%. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per square meter), while Venezuela ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, supplies from abroad of articles of bitumen in rolls was finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Dominican Republic (X square meters), followed by Uruguay (X square meters), Chile (X square meters), Cuba (X square meters), Mexico (X square meters), Colombia (X square meters), Jamaica (X square meters) and Brazil (X square meters) were the main importers of articles of bitumen in rolls, together creating 79% of total imports. Paraguay (X square meters), Bolivia (X square meters) and Peru (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Jamaica (with a CAGR of +16.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X), Chile ($X) and Cuba ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 36% of total imports. These countries were followed by Uruguay, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Jamaica, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, which together accounted for a further 46%.

Among the main importing countries, Jamaica, with a CAGR of +12.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per square meter), while the Dominican Republic ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
