The Latin American plaster article market totaled $X in 2021, picking up by 2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, overseas shipments of articles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plaster article exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +54.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Mexico dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons) and Argentina (X tons), together generating a 12% share of total exports. Honduras (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to plaster article exports from Mexico stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Honduras (+13.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Honduras emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +13.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Colombia (-7.8%) and Argentina (-13.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+20 p.p.) and Honduras (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia and Argentina saw its share reduced by -7.8% and -15.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest plaster article supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Honduras, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico stood at +7.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (-7.6% per year) and Honduras (+16.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 31% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, supplies from abroad of articles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster was finally on the rise to reach X tons after six years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Colombia (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Chile (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), El Salvador (X tons) and Panama (X tons) represented the main importer of articles of plaster or of compositions based on plaster in Latin America and the Caribbean, constituting 67% of total import. The following importers - Uruguay (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons), Honduras (X tons), Cuba (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Panama (with a CAGR of +47.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X), Colombia ($X) and the Dominican Republic ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 34% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 8.5%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
