The Latin American articles of zinc market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, approx. X tons of articles of zinc were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, articles of zinc exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Peru (X tons) represented the major exporter of articles of zinc, comprising 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), achieving an 18% share of total exports. Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to articles of zinc exports from Peru stood at -11.9%. At the same time, Chile (+9.4%) and Argentina (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Brazil (-7.3%) and Mexico (-19.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Peru (+15 p.p.), Argentina (+2.5 p.p.), Brazil (+2.2 p.p.) and Chile (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Mexico (-13.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Peru ($X), Mexico ($X) and Brazil ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 90% share of total exports. Argentina and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 6.3%.
Among the main exporting countries, Argentina, with a CAGR of +2.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Articles Of Zinc Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, overseas purchases of articles of zinc were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, articles of zinc imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Mexico prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 58% of total imports in 2021. Colombia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Brazil (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Peru (X tons). All these countries together held near 25% share of total imports. The following importers - Chile (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons) - each recorded a 5.7% share of total imports.
Mexico experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of articles of zinc. At the same time, Guatemala (+14.9%), Ecuador (+10.6%), Colombia (+2.4%), Brazil (+2.3%) and Peru (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012-2021. Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Argentina (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil increased by +4, +3.2, +2.2 and +1.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported articles of zinc in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 5.6% share.
In Mexico, articles of zinc imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-1.1% per year) and Colombia (+6.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
