In value terms, the largest artificial guts supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Brazil ($X) and Uruguay ($X), together accounting for 97% of total exports. Costa Rica lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 2.3%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Costa Rica, with a CAGR of +17.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 9.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas purchases of artificial guts (sausage skins) decreased by -3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial guts imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Mexico (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) represented roughly 66% of total imports in 2022. Colombia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.5% share, followed by Argentina (6.3%) and Chile (4.7%). The following importers - Guatemala (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.1% share of total imports.
