Avocado Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Latin American avocado market was estimated at $X in 2022, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Avocado Production in Latin America and the Caribbean
In value terms, avocado production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
The country with the largest volume of avocado production was Mexico (X tons), comprising approx. 40% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Peru (X tons), twofold. Colombia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 15% share.
In Mexico, avocado production increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (+14.3% per year) and Colombia (+13.5% per year).
In 2022, the average yield of avocados in Latin America and the Caribbean reduced modestly to X tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the avocado yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The avocado harvested area shrank to X ha in 2022, dropping by -3.2% compared with 2021. The total harvested area indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, avocado harvested area increased by +86.5% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 15%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Avocado Exports
Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of avocados, when their volume decreased by -10% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, avocado exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Mexico (X tons) and Peru (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together committing 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), committing a 5.1% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Colombia (with a CAGR of +67.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest avocado supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Peru ($X) and Chile ($X), together accounting for 95% of total exports. Colombia and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.2%.
Colombia, with a CAGR of +67.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Avocado Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
Avocado imports amounted to X tons in 2022, remaining constant against the year before. Overall, imports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 210% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, avocado imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 60%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Chile was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 39% of total imports. Honduras (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Argentina (17%), El Salvador (9.7%) and Costa Rica (5.5%). The following importers - Panama (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - each recorded a 4% share of total imports.
Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the avocados imports, with a CAGR of +56.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uruguay (+35.0%), Panama (+15.0%), Honduras (+10.9%) and Argentina (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. El Salvador experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Costa Rica (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+38 p.p.) and Panama (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of El Salvador (-16.2 p.p.) and Costa Rica (-19.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Chile ($X), Argentina ($X) and El Salvador ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 74% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +51.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -21.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by El Salvador (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
