In 2021, the amount of bottles, jars and other containers of glass exported in Latin America and the Caribbean rose remarkably to X units, surging by 7.9% on the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, glass bottle, jar and container exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Mexico represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which amounted to 50% of total exports. Costa Rica (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Chile (X units), Guatemala (X units), Peru (X units) and Argentina (X units). All these countries together held near 43% share of total exports. Colombia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to glass bottle, jar and container exports from Mexico stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Chile (+19.7%), Argentina (+10.4%), Guatemala (+5.1%), Costa Rica (+2.6%) and Peru (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Colombia (-16.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+8.6 p.p.), Argentina (+2.4 p.p.), Mexico (+2.4 p.p.) and Guatemala (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Colombia (-12.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest glass bottle, jar and container supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Costa Rica ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with an 8% share.

In Mexico, glass bottle, jar and container exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (+1.7% per year) and Guatemala (+7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per unit), while Argentina ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, glass bottle, jar and container imports in Latin America and the Caribbean skyrocketed to X units, jumping by 33% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Brazil (X units), the Dominican Republic (X units), Mexico (X units) and Colombia (X units) represented roughly 54% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Jamaica (X units), mixing up a 5.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Peru (X units), Argentina (X units), Cuba (X units), Honduras (X units), Guatemala (X units), El Salvador (X units), Chile (X units) and Uruguay (X units) - together made up 25% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), the Dominican Republic ($X) and Colombia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 42% of total imports. Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Jamaica, Guatemala, Chile, Cuba, Honduras, El Salvador and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Peru, with a CAGR of +17.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 5.7%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per unit), while Mexico ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
