In 2022, overseas shipments of brewing or distilling dregs and waste increased by 47% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 475% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, brewing dregs exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 456%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of brewing or distilling dregs and waste, namely Argentina, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Argentina was also the fastest-growing in terms of the brewing or distilling dregs and waste exports, with a CAGR of +50.7% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Argentina (+76 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) also remains the largest brewing dregs supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, the amount of brewing or distilling dregs and waste imported in Latin America and the Caribbean fell to X tons, approximately equating 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, brewing dregs imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 133% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Mexico represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Honduras (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons), together achieving a 47% share of total imports.

Colombia (+13 p.p.), Uruguay (+5.8 p.p.), El Salvador (+3.8 p.p.), Honduras (+3.6 p.p.) and Costa Rica (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -32.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported brewing or distilling dregs and waste in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by El Salvador, with a 7.2% share.

In Mexico, brewing dregs imports plunged by an average annual rate of -8.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Colombia (+7.2% per year) and El Salvador (+7.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while Costa Rica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
