In 2022, the Latin American cadmium market increased by 65% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a strong expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Cadmium Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, cadmium production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 70%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Cadmium Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Cadmium exports reduced dramatically to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -63.8% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 37%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cadmium exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Peru (X tons), together resulting at 100% of total export.

Peru was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cadmium exports, with a CAGR of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. Peru (+73 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Peru ($X) also remains the largest cadmium supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -6.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cadmium export price decreased by +0.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Peru.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Peru amounted to +1.5% per year.

Cadmium Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, purchases abroad of cadmium decreased by -94.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 267% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cadmium imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 149%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Argentina was the largest importer of cadmium in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 80% of total imports in 2022. Cuba (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Peru (5.8%).

Imports into Argentina decreased at an average annual rate of -15.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cuba (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cuba emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +2.1% from 2012-2022. Peru experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Argentina, Cuba and Peru increased by +24, +11 and +5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cadmium in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Argentina amounted to -13.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (-4.8% per year) and Cuba (+9.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Cuba ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cuba (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
