Calcium Carbonate Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, the Latin American calcium carbonate market decreased by -9.1% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Calcium Carbonate Production in Latin America and the Caribbean
In value terms, calcium carbonate production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, shipments abroad of calcium carbonate increased by 36% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after six years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, calcium carbonate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the six major exporters of calcium carbonate, namely Guatemala, Brazil, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Argentina, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Guatemala (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Mexico ($X) and the Dominican Republic ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 58% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Guatemala, Colombia, Argentina and Peru, which together accounted for a further 33%.
Among the main exporting countries, Guatemala, with a CAGR of +17.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 11%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Calcium Carbonate Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, approx. X tons of calcium carbonate were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +93.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 49%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, calcium carbonate imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the key importers of calcium carbonate in 2021, resulting at near 22% and 15% of total imports, respectively. Guatemala (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by El Salvador (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Trinidad and Tobago (X tons). All these countries together took near 36% share of total imports. Panama (X tons), Argentina (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Belize (X tons), Paraguay (X tons) and Bolivia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Panama (with a CAGR of +105.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Ecuador ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 44% of total imports. These countries were followed by Guatemala, Colombia, El Salvador, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Bolivia and Belize, which together accounted for a further 44%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Panama, with a CAGR of +92.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Belize ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
