Camel Meat Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the Latin American camel meat market decreased by -20.6% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, camel meat production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, faced a dramatic decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 355%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Chile (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of camel meat production, accounting for 84% of total volume. Moreover, camel meat production in Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Argentina (X tons), fivefold.

In Chile, camel meat production decreased by an average annual rate of -15.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Camel Meat Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas shipments of camel meat were finally on the rise to reach X kg after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 410%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, camel meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 520%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Argentina (X kg), together resulting at 100% of total export.

Argentina was also the fastest-growing in terms of the camel meat exports, with a CAGR of +43.6% from 2012 to 2022. Argentina (+99 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) also remains the largest camel meat supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In Argentina, camel meat exports increased at an average annual rate of +39.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -19.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 91%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Argentina.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Argentina amounted to -2.7% per year.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2020, after two years of decline, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of camel meat, when their volume decreased by -98.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a precipitous setback. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, camel meat imports shrank sharply to $X in 2020. In general, imports saw a significant contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In 2020, Saint Maarten (Dutch part) (X tons) was the key importer of camel meat in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 100% of total import.

Saint Maarten (Dutch part) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of camel meat. While the share of Saint Maarten (Dutch part) (+99 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
