Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, shipments abroad of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics decreased by -6.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 111%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, plastic bottle exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 124% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Uruguay was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 54% of total exports. Paraguay (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Guatemala (X tons). All these countries together held near 33% share of total exports. The following exporters - Argentina (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) - together made up 10% of total exports.

Exports from Uruguay increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2020 to 2022. At the same time, Guatemala (+14.5%), Brazil (+13.3%) and Ecuador (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2020-2022. By contrast, Argentina (-2.3%) and Paraguay (-22.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uruguay (+54 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ecuador, Argentina, Guatemala and Paraguay saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -4.6%, -7.8% and -39.1% from 2020 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uruguay ($X) remains the largest plastic bottle supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guatemala ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a 15% share.

In Uruguay, plastic bottle exports expanded at an average annual rate of +22.2% over the period from 2020-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guatemala (+25.7% per year) and Paraguay (-7.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Over the last two-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +13.0%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+20.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
