Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades), when their volume increased by 3.4% to X tons. In general, exports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 324%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 285% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the major exporters of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) in Latin America and the Caribbean, together generating 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uruguay (X tons), creating an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +22.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Argentina ($X) and Uruguay ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 97% of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 34%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the third year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in supplies from abroad of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades), which increased by 77% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the main importer of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Mexico (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Argentina (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 38% share of total imports. Peru (X tons), Chile (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +17.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sulphite wood pulp importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Mexico ($X) and Argentina ($X), together accounting for 78% of total imports. These countries were followed by Chile, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador, which together accounted for a further 17%.

Among the main importing countries, Peru, with a CAGR of +17.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
