For the third year in a row, the Latin American cherry and sour cherry market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -9.4% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -29.2% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Production of Cherries and Sour Cherries in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 55% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Chile (X tons) remains the largest cherry and sour cherry producing country in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising approx. 97% of total volume. It was followed by Argentina (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total production.

In Chile, cherry and sour cherry production expanded at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average cherry and sour cherry yield soared to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 27% compared with 2021. The yield indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry and sour cherry yield increased by +42.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cherry and sour cherry yield hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cherry and sour cherry harvested area reduced to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -8.9% against 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports of Cherries and Sour Cherries

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the amount of cherries and sour cherries exported in Latin America and the Caribbean surged to X tons, with an increase of 18% against the year before. In general, exports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 120%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 86%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Chile (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2022.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cherries and sour cherries exports, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile increased by +2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) also remains the largest cherry and sour cherry supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 21%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Chile amounted to -1.5% per year.

Imports of Cherries and Sour Cherries

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, approx. X tons of cherries and sour cherries were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; shrinking by -23% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +26.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) represented roughly 66% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), creating a 17% share of total imports. Peru (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Argentina (with a CAGR of +33.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries and sour cherries in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ecuador ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with an 18% share.

In Brazil, cherry and sour cherry imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ecuador (+3.4% per year) and Mexico (+4.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
