Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, overseas shipments of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) decreased by -13.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chlorides exports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mexico was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), generating an 11% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mexico experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride). At the same time, Colombia (+13.6%) and Argentina (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2021. Uruguay experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Peru (-20.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+7.4 p.p.), Argentina (+4.5 p.p.) and Colombia (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Peru saw its share reduced by -10.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X), Mexico ($X) and Colombia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 93% share of total exports.

Colombia, with a CAGR of +10.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Chlorides Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) imported in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to X tons, surging by 8.5% on 2020 figures. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chlorides imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 74%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the key importers of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) in 2021, amounting to approx. 24% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Argentina (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mexico (7.2%), Ecuador (5.2%), Colombia (5.1%) and Trinidad and Tobago (4.9%).

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Trinidad and Tobago ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
