Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of coarse animal hair, when their volume increased by 97% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 286% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coarse animal hair exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 69%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uruguay represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), generating a 25% share of total exports. Peru (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coarse animal hair exports from Uruguay stood at +33.0%. At the same time, Peru (+40.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +40.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Argentina (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uruguay (+68 p.p.) and Peru (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Argentina saw its share reduced by -61.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Uruguay ($X) remains the largest coarse animal hair supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

In Uruguay, coarse animal hair exports increased at an average annual rate of +27.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-25.6% per year) and Peru (+27.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -31.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 117% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (-4.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Coarse animal hair imports reduced rapidly to X tons in 2022, falling by -34.1% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coarse animal hair imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 88%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Saint Kitts and Nevis was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 50% of total imports. The Dominican Republic (X kg) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Peru (13%) and Bahamas (10%). Chile (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Saint Kitts and Nevis decreased at an average annual rate of -1.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahamas (+34.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahamas emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +34.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Chile (-4.0%), Peru (-6.4%) and the Dominican Republic (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Dominican Republic (+21 p.p.) and Bahamas (+9.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Chile, Peru and Saint Kitts and Nevis saw its share reduced by -2.3%, -14.1% and -14.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Saint Kitts and Nevis ($X), the Dominican Republic ($X) and Peru ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total imports. Chile and Bahamas lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.7%.

Bahamas, with a CAGR of +25.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 129%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while Bahamas ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+40.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
