Coffee Extract Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American coffee extract market reduced modestly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Coffee Extract Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, coffee extract production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 8.2%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Coffee Extract Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -0.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coffee extract exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 63% of total exports. Colombia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Ecuador (X tons) and Mexico (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 34% share of total exports.

Exports from Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ecuador (-4.0%) and Mexico (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+6.2 p.p.) and Colombia (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Mexico (-5.4 p.p.) and Ecuador (-5.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Mexico ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 87% share of total exports.

Colombia, with a CAGR of +1.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Coffee Extract Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by -1.4% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +49.6% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 18%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 15%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of coffee extract imports in 2021 were Argentina (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Chile (X tons), Peru (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together accounting for 71% of total import. The following importers - Bolivia (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Belize (X tons), Saint Lucia (X tons), Trinidad and Tobago (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Saint Lucia (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest coffee extract importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Chile ($X), Peru ($X) and Argentina ($X), together comprising 39% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, Colombia, Bolivia, Paraguay, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and Belize, which together accounted for a further 50%.

Among the main importing countries, Saint Lucia, with a CAGR of +30.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 2.9%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
