The Latin American corrugated paper market contracted modestly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Overall, exports, however, recorded a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, corrugated paper exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 41%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from El Salvador (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together resulting at 80% of total export. It was distantly followed by Guatemala (X tons), committing a 4.8% share of total exports. Costa Rica (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +24.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest corrugated paper supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were El Salvador ($X), Mexico ($X) and Argentina ($X), together comprising 65% of total exports. Brazil, Chile, Guatemala and Costa Rica lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +14.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 34% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+23.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of corrugated paper and paperboard increased by 23% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Mexico dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2021. Honduras (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mexico was also the fastest-growing in terms of the corrugated paper and paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +5.5% from 2012 to 2021. Honduras (-8.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
