For the tenth year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in overseas purchases of couscous, which increased by 28% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, couscous imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. All these countries together took near 16% share of total imports. Colombia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Honduras (with a CAGR of +146.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Honduras ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 66% share of total imports.

Honduras, with a CAGR of +105.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, declining by -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 4.2%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
