Cucumber And Gherkin Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American cucumber and gherkin market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption saw resilient growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of cucumber and gherkin production was Mexico (X tons), accounting for 76% of total volume. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin production in Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Cuba (X tons), more than tenfold. Peru (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Mexico stood at +5.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cuba (-1.6% per year) and Peru (+2.3% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of cucumbers and gherkins in Latin America and the Caribbean was estimated at X tons per ha, growing by 8.4% on the previous year. The yield indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cucumber and gherkin yield decreased by -7.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the cucumber and gherkin yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of cucumbers and gherkins were harvested in Latin America and the Caribbean; with a decrease of -3.8% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 9.6%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas shipments of cucumbers and gherkins increased by 1.5% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +82.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports amounted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +91.7% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Mexico dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. Honduras (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +11.1% from 2012-2022. Honduras experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mexico (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Honduras saw its share reduced by -1.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest cucumber and gherkin supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Honduras ($X), with a 1.7% share of total exports.

In Mexico, cucumber and gherkin exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Honduras (+1.4% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+14.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cucumber and gherkin export price decreased by -21.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cucumber And Gherkin Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the fifth consecutive year, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded decline in overseas purchases of cucumbers and gherkins, which decreased by -5.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cucumber and gherkin imports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 23%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

El Salvador prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 73% of total imports in 2022. Paraguay (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nicaragua (X tons) and Aruba (X tons). All these countries together took near 17% share of total imports. The following importers - Guatemala (X tons), Honduras (X tons) and Cayman Islands (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cucumber and gherkin imports into El Salvador stood at -1.5%. At the same time, Cayman Islands (+57.0%), Nicaragua (+23.5%), Paraguay (+17.6%) and Honduras (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cayman Islands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +57.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Aruba (-1.9%) and Guatemala (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. El Salvador (+13 p.p.), Paraguay (+5.9 p.p.), Nicaragua (+5.5 p.p.) and Cayman Islands (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Guatemala saw its share reduced by -2.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cucumber and gherkin importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Aruba ($X), El Salvador ($X) and Cayman Islands ($X), together comprising 71% of total imports.

Cayman Islands, with a CAGR of +53.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Aruba ($X per ton), while El Salvador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
