From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +0.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of currants and gooseberries in Latin America and the Caribbean contracted to X tons per ha, which is down by -5.1% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 197% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the currant and gooseberry yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of currants and gooseberries production in Latin America and the Caribbean was estimated at X ha, approximately reflecting the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area decreased by -12.5%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to currant and gooseberry production attained the maximum at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, approx. X tons of currants and gooseberries were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; falling by -25.7% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 261% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 167%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Colombia represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 79% of total exports. Peru (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mexico (7%).

Exports from Colombia increased at an average annual rate of +39.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+64.1%) and Mexico (+40.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +64.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Colombia (+28 p.p.), Peru (+11 p.p.) and Mexico (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Colombia amounted to +34.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+54.6% per year) and Mexico (+48.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Currant and gooseberry imports soared to X tons in 2022, rising by 22% against 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 87% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 237%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mexico represented the main importer of currants and gooseberries in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 44% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Trinidad and Tobago (X tons), Guyana (X tons) and Aruba (X tons), together making up a 50% share of total imports. The following importers - Brazil (X tons) and Bahamas (X tons) - together made up 4.8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Guyana (with a CAGR of +395.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported currants and gooseberries in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Trinidad and Tobago, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-8.3% per year) and Trinidad and Tobago (+13.6% per year).

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -14.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight downturn.
