Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, supplies from abroad of dextrins and other modified starches increased by 9.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to modified starches imports into Mexico stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Paraguay (+44.9%), Guatemala (+13.8%), the Dominican Republic (+5.5%), Peru (+4.3%), Costa Rica (+3.8%) and Argentina (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +44.9% from 2012-2022. Ecuador experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-2.1%), Chile (-2.1%) and Colombia (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Paraguay (+9.6 p.p.) and Guatemala (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Chile (-5.4 p.p.) and Colombia (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dextrins and other modified starches in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico amounted to +4.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+1.2% per year) and Argentina (+3.1% per year).

As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
