In 2021, the Latin American dichloromethane market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a slight decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dichloromethane production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 45%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Dichloromethane Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, approx. X tons of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; increasing by 25% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 112% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dichloromethane exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Panama (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) were the largest exporters of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) in 2021, recording near 31% and 25% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Honduras (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons), together comprising a 36% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +45.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dichloromethane supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Panama ($X) and Guatemala ($X), with a combined 69% share of total exports. Chile, Honduras, Colombia and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Among the main exporting countries, the Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +36.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 22%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Dichloromethane Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Dichloromethane imports reached X tons in 2021, surging by 11% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild decrease. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dichloromethane imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) represented the largest importer of dichloromethane (methylene chloride), generating 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Peru (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and British Virgin Islands (X tons), together making up a 42% share of total imports. Chile (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -1.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, British Virgin Islands (+8.9%) and Chile (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, British Virgin Islands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +8.9% from 2012-2021. Peru experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Colombia (-2.6%), Argentina (-4.5%) and Mexico (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. British Virgin Islands (+3 p.p.) and Brazil (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Argentina and Mexico saw its share reduced by -2.3% and -6.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dichloromethane importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Mexico ($X) and Argentina ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports. Colombia, Peru, Chile and British Virgin Islands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

British Virgin Islands, with a CAGR of +7.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 42% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while British Virgin Islands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
