In value terms, Mexico ($X), Bahamas ($X) and Chile ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 34% share of total imports. Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Panama, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahamas ($X per ton), while Panama ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
