Eggplant Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the Latin American eggplant market increased by 2.6% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a measured increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Eggplant Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, eggplant production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Mexico (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of eggplant production, accounting for 48% of total volume. Moreover, eggplant production in Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Guyana (X tons), threefold. The Dominican Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.

In Mexico, eggplant production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Guyana (+32.5% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+0.3% per year).

In 2022, the average eggplant yield in Latin America and the Caribbean contracted to X tons per ha, which is down by -4.4% against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of eggplants (aubergines) production in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to X ha, stabilizing at 2021. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Eggplant Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Eggplant exports shrank to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -7.4% on 2021. Total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.5% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 51%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, eggplant exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Mexico (X tons) represented the main exporter of eggplants (aubergines), generating 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Honduras (X tons), creating a 14% share of total exports. The Dominican Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant exports from Mexico stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Honduras (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Honduras emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Dominican Republic (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+4.4 p.p.) and Honduras (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Dominican Republic saw its share reduced by -6.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Honduras ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico stood at +3.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Honduras (+14.1% per year) and the Dominican Republic (-7.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, eggplant export price decreased by -18.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, approx. X tons of eggplants (aubergines) were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +5.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 82%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Haiti (X tons), distantly followed by Jamaica (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Venezuela (X tons), Bahamas (X tons) and Aruba (X tons) represented the major importers of eggplants (aubergines), together comprising 80% of total imports. Honduras (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Paraguay (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Aruba ($X), Bahamas ($X) and Haiti ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 65% of total imports. Venezuela, Jamaica, Paraguay and Honduras lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Paraguay, with a CAGR of +23.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -4.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Aruba ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Aruba (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
