Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Calculator exports shrank notably to X units in 2021, which is down by -83.4% compared with 2020. In general, exports faced a dramatic decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 322%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, calculator exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 276% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Panama (X units), Guatemala (X units), Chile (X units) and Mexico (X units) was the key exporter of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions in Latin America and the Caribbean, creating 82% of total export. Uruguay (X units) held a 6.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Dominican Republic (5.8%). In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per unit), while Guatemala ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+22.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of electronic calculators and pocket-size data recording, reproducing and displaying machines with calculating functions, when their volume increased by 23% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep downturn. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In terms of the main importing countries, Chile, with a CAGR of -0.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -23.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 45%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Brazil ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
