The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 48%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Brazil amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (-4.2%).

Ethylene Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of ethylene decreased by -58.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, imports showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethylene imports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Colombia (X tons) represented the major importer of ethylene, achieving 51% of total imports. Mexico (X tons) held a 31% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Trinidad and Tobago (12%). Peru (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
