The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of expansible polystyrene in primary forms, when their volume decreased by -15.3% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, expansible polystyrene exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Mexico was the major exporter of expansible polystyrene in primary forms in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), achieving a 19% share of total exports. Chile (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+83.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +83.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+19 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Chile and Mexico saw its share reduced by -4% and -13.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest expansible polystyrene supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico stood at -1.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+83.4% per year) and Chile (-10.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 67% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Expansible Polystyrene Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, overseas purchases of expansible polystyrene in primary forms were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, expansible polystyrene imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Mexico represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 32% of total imports. Brazil (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Chile (9.4%), Colombia (9%), Peru (7.4%), Bolivia (6.6%) and Argentina (5.3%).
Imports into Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Peru (+7.0%), Bolivia (+5.8%), Chile (+3.6%) and Colombia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +7.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Argentina (-3.6%) and Brazil (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+3.3 p.p.), Peru (+3.2 p.p.), Bolivia (+2.5 p.p.), Chile (+2.3 p.p.) and Colombia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Argentina and Brazil saw its share reduced by -2.3% and -6.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported expansible polystyrene in primary forms in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 9.5% share.
In Mexico, expansible polystyrene imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-4.4% per year) and Chile (+3.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mexico ($X per ton) and Bolivia ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
