In 2021, overseas shipments of fonio decreased by 0% to X kg, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 19,849%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fonio exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a sharp decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 30,253% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 582%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bolivia ($X per ton), while Colombia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+2.6%).

Fonio Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the amount of fonio imported in Latin America and the Caribbean reduced rapidly to X kg, shrinking by -40.9% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 13,745% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fonio imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a sharp decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 980%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Bahamas was the major importing country with an import of about X kg, which finished at 85% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Guyana (X kg), making up a 15% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fonio imports into Bahamas stood at -6.9%. Guyana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
