The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of formic acid, its salts and esters was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 48%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. Ecuador (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guatemala (+5.7%), Argentina (+4.6%) and Ecuador (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +5.7% from 2012-2021. Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Colombia (-1.2%) and Mexico (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Argentina (+5.9 p.p.) and Brazil (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mexico (-5.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported formic acid, its salts and esters in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at +1.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+0.4% per year) and Mexico (-6.5% per year).
