Garlic Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the Latin American garlic market decreased by -5.3% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Garlic Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, garlic production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Peru (X tons), with a combined 69% share of total production. Mexico, Guatemala, Chile and Venezuela lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +5.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average garlic yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 5% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The garlic harvested area declined to X ha in 2022, which is down by -2.7% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 5.7% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Garlic Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the seventh year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in shipments abroad of garlic, which increased by 6.6% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +89.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, garlic exports declined to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -14.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Argentina represented the key exporter of garlic in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 71% of total exports in 2022. Mexico (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Chile (7.9%) and Peru (7.3%).

Exports from Argentina increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+9.9%) and Mexico (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +9.9% from 2012-2022. Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Peru increased by +3.4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest garlic supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 12% share.

In Argentina, garlic exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+8.0% per year) and Chile (+1.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -12.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 36%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Garlic Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas purchases of garlic decreased by -7.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the main importer of garlic, comprising 52% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons), together creating a 24% share of total imports. Mexico (X tons), Chile (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Trinidad and Tobago (X tons) and Panama (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+21.3%), Paraguay (+12.9%), Chile (+7.0%), Costa Rica (+4.1%) and Ecuador (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012-2022. Panama, Trinidad and Tobago and Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mexico (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Dominican Republic (+5.4 p.p.), Chile (+1.9 p.p.), Paraguay (+1.7 p.p.) and Panama (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-11.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic import price decreased by -7.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 56%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
