In 2022, the Dominican Republic (X tons) was the main exporter of glass in the mass, comprising 33% of total exports. Guatemala (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Honduras (8.2%), Mexico (5.9%), Nicaragua (5.2%), El Salvador (5%) and Panama (4.7%). Argentina (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), Bolivia (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Haiti (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Panama (with a CAGR of +153.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X), Guatemala ($X) and Mexico ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 72% of total exports. Honduras, Argentina, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Brazil, Panama, Uruguay, Haiti and Bolivia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
Panama, with a CAGR of +101.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, glass in the mass export price increased by +82.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 41%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by El Salvador (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Glass in The Mass
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
For the third consecutive year, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded decline in purchases abroad of glass in the mass, which decreased by -19.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, glass in mass imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, glass in the mass imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Mexico (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) represented the major importers of glass in the mass in Latin America and the Caribbean, together committing 64% of total imports. Brazil (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Guatemala (7.3%) and Trinidad and Tobago (6.8%). Paraguay (X tons) and Peru (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($X), Costa Rica ($X) and Brazil ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 66% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +24.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. Import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, glass in the mass import price increased by +106.1% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 31%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per ton), while Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
