Glucose Exports
Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, the amount of glucose and glucose syrup exported in Latin America and the Caribbean reached X tons, growing by 9.9% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild decline. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, glucose exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Argentina (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) represented roughly 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Colombia (X tons), generating a 6.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +27.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, Mexico ($X), Argentina ($X) and Brazil ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total exports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Glucose Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
Glucose imports soared to X tons in 2021, jumping by 25% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, glucose imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Mexico dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Guatemala (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together constituting a 20% share of total imports. The following importers - El Salvador (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Honduras (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to glucose imports into Mexico stood at -2.3%. At the same time, Colombia (+8.9%), Honduras (+4.1%), Guatemala (+4.0%), El Salvador (+3.3%) and Brazil (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +8.9% from 2012-2021. Ecuador and Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Colombia and Guatemala increased by +3.4 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glucose and glucose syrup in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guatemala ($X), with a 7.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Guatemala (+4.0% per year) and Colombia (+9.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 8.1%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
