In 2021, the Latin American non-wheat groats market increased by 0.1% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 135%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, non-wheat groats exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons) were the largest exporters of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) in Latin America and the Caribbean, together making up 60% of total exports. Mexico (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Argentina (X tons). All these countries together held near 31% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) and Barbados (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +59.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X), Brazil ($X) and Mexico ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 78% of total exports.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +42.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Barbados ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Barbados (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) imported in Latin America and the Caribbean fell significantly to X tons, with a decrease of -24.3% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 17%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat groats imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Haiti (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Trinidad and Tobago (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Jamaica (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) represented the major importer of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) in Latin America and the Caribbean, making up 86% of total import.
