For the fifth year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in shipments abroad of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone, which increased by 8.3% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 26%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Mexico dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Jamaica (X tons), constituting a 6.4% share of total exports. The following exporters - Peru (X tons), Guatemala (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons) - each reached a 5.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports from Mexico stood at +11.0%. At the same time, Jamaica (+12.6%) and Guatemala (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jamaica emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Dominican Republic (-6.3%) and Peru (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+14 p.p.) and Jamaica (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Dominican Republic and Peru saw its share reduced by -4.3% and -5.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest gypsum, anhydrite and limestone supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with an 8.1% share.

In Mexico, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (-0.5% per year) and Guatemala (+18.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Gypsum, Anhydrite And Limestone

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, approx. X tons of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; jumping by 35% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 41% of total imports. Colombia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Peru (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Chile (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 47% share of total imports. Paraguay (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Peru (with a CAGR of +7.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest gypsum, anhydrite and limestone importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Colombia ($X) and Chile ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +13.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
