Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers exported in Latin America and the Caribbean skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 72% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

El Salvador was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 60% of total exports. Mexico (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Panama (12%). The following exporters - Guatemala (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Peru (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total exports.

El Salvador experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers. At the same time, Brazil (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-4.6%), Guatemala (-5.6%), Mexico (-11.2%) and Panama (-29.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of El Salvador, Mexico, Brazil and Guatemala increased by +47, +6, +2.5 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest hairpin supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by El Salvador ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 9.8% share.

In Mexico, hairpin exports shrank by an average annual rate of -6.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: El Salvador (+3.3% per year) and Brazil (+17.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -34.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 47%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hairpin Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Hairpin imports soared to X tons in 2021, growing by 31% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Colombia (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Peru (X tons), Chile (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Panama (X tons), Argentina (X tons), El Salvador (X tons) and Honduras (X tons) was the key importer of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers in Latin America and the Caribbean, generating 89% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Chile (with a CAGR of +20.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest hairpin importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Peru ($X), together comprising 38% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +12.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
