In 2021, shipments abroad of hand-woven tapestries of the type gobelins, flanders, aubusson, and beauvais was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hand-woven tapestry exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Chile represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 44% of total exports. Panama (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons). All these countries together took near 46% share of total exports. Trinidad and Tobago (X kg) and the Dominican Republic (X kg) took a little share of total exports.
Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hand-woven tapestries of the type gobelins, flanders, aubusson, and beauvais exports, with a CAGR of +42.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Trinidad and Tobago (+20.5%), the Dominican Republic (+18.8%), Brazil (+16.3%) and Ecuador (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Peru (-5.6%) and Panama (-23.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+44 p.p.), Brazil (+9.9 p.p.), Peru (+3.7 p.p.), Ecuador (+3.5 p.p.), Trinidad and Tobago (+2.9 p.p.) and the Dominican Republic (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Panama (-60.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X), Brazil ($X) and Peru ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 81% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, the Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +48.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -63.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 170%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+25.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, purchases abroad of hand-woven tapestries of the type gobelins, flanders, aubusson, and beauvais increased by 33% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 107%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hand-woven tapestry imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Bolivia (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons) were the key importers of hand-woven tapestries of the type gobelins, flanders, aubusson, and beauvais in Latin America and the Caribbean, together making up 59% of total imports. Mexico (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Paraguay (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and British Virgin Islands (X tons). All these countries together held near 34% share of total imports. El Salvador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bolivia (with a CAGR of +35.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Guatemala ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hand-woven tapestries of the type gobelins, flanders, aubusson, and beauvais in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by British Virgin Islands ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 14% share.
In Guatemala, hand-woven tapestry imports increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: British Virgin Islands (0.0% per year) and Mexico (-14.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 9.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hand-woven tapestry import price decreased by -11.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 43%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was British Virgin Islands ($X per ton), while Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
