Hazelnut Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Latin American hazelnut market soared to $X in 2021, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. In general, consumption enjoyed a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Hazelnut Production in Latin America and the Caribbean
In value terms, hazelnut production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 77%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Chile (X tons) remains the largest hazelnut producing country in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising approx. 99% of total volume.
In Chile, hazelnut production expanded at an average annual rate of +21.7% over the period from 2012-2021.
In 2021, the average hazelnut yield in Latin America and the Caribbean rose rapidly to X tons per ha, surging by 8.8% against the previous year. The yield indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut yield decreased by -7.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the yield increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the hazelnut yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The hazelnut harvested area amounted to X ha in 2021, flattening at 2020. In general, the harvested area posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Hazelnut Exports
Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, overseas shipments of hazelnuts decreased by -38.9% to X tons, falling for the seventh consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports showed a sharp contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hazelnut exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Chile (X tons) represented the major exporter of hazelnuts, committing 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), constituting a 22% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from Chile stood at -22.2%. At the same time, Argentina (+25.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +25.2% from 2012-2021. Argentina (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Chile saw its share reduced by -22.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile amounted to -22.3%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 48%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Chile stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+2.0%).
Hazelnut Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, approx. X tons of hazelnuts were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; picking up by 4.6% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 45%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Dominican Republic (X tons), distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Panama (X tons) and Bahamas (X tons) represented the key importers of hazelnuts, together mixing up 95% of total imports. Peru (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Panama (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X), Brazil ($X) and Mexico ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 84% of total imports. These countries were followed by Panama, Bahamas and Peru, which together accounted for a further 12%.
Panama, with a CAGR of +22.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 46%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Bahamas ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
