In 2021, shipments abroad of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +63.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, inactive yeast exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +43.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 24%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Brazil prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), constituting a 6.5% share of total exports. Argentina (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to inactive yeast exports from Brazil stood at +8.1%. At the same time, Mexico (+14.7%) and Argentina (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +14.7% from 2012-2021. Mexico (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Brazil saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest inactive yeast supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled +7.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+9.4% per year) and Argentina (+10.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -3.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, imports of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms in Latin America and the Caribbean soared to X tons, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +67.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, inactive yeast imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2021, Mexico (X tons) and Chile (X tons) represented the largest importers of inactive yeasts and other dead single-cell micro-organisms in Latin America and the Caribbean, together amounting to near 58% of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) held a 9.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Argentina (9.2%) and Colombia (4.7%). Brazil (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X), Chile ($X) and Argentina ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 65% of total imports. These countries were followed by Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, which together accounted for a further 21%.

The Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +17.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
